Training

driving lessons

A package of practical lessons for your driving license b is made up of three phases:

Phase 1: Vehicle Operation and Vehicle Control

Phase 2: The viewing techniques

Phase 3: Looking ahead and thinking ahead

Phase 1: Vehicle Operation and Vehicle Control

To be able to maneuver well through traffic, it is important that you have good technical control of the car.

It is also very important that you understand the technical controls (to steer, drive away, fuses, to change gear, etc.) can do without having to think about it.

Phase 2: The viewing techniques

In phase 2 we are going to combine the "technical" driving with the necessary viewing techniques. So we are actually going from "technical" driving to "safe" driving.

For most students this is the most difficult phase!

Phase 3: Looking ahead and thinking ahead

In this phase the emphasis is on looking ahead and thinking ahead.

For a safe, to become a social and independent car driver, you must not only be able to solve your own mistakes, but also be able to respond directly to those of your fellow road user.

You will also learn in this phase:

• Driving your own route

• Driving with navigation

Theory exam

You can already pass your theory exam from 16 years. We are happy to advise you on the planning of your theory- and your practical exam. Of course you can also visit Rijschool De Rijk for theory lessons. The theory certificate is 18 valid for months.

The theory exam for the passenger car takes about 45 minutes, including the explanation. This exam can be taken in Dutch or English. You must be present about fifteen minutes before the start of the exam.

The exam consists of yes/no questions, multiple choice questions, questions where you have to enter a number yourself and questions about how you would act in a certain traffic situation (with hazard perception).

The theory exam consists of two parts:

• 25 questions about hazard perception

• 40 questions about traffic rules and traffic insight

So you get 65 questions and in total 45 minutes before the theory exam. For the hazard perception questions you have per question 8 seconds and serve at least 13 of the 25 answer questions correctly. You serve traffic rules and traffic insight 35 of the total 40 answer questions correctly.

Hazard Recognition

You answer the questions about hazard perception by indicating what you would do in, for example, the situation below:

Hazard Recognition

• brakes (i.e. considerably reduce speed or even stop)

• release gas (i.e. being extra attentive and prepared for a different behavioral choice);

• or nothing (i.e. just keep driving at the same speed).

For every question you have 8 seconds to answer. That seems short, but in real traffic you often have to decide much faster what to do!

Traffic rules

Of course you need to know the rules in traffic to understand the signs and other signs in traffic. Your knowledge of the traffic rules will be tested in this section.

Traffic Insight

The questions about traffic insight are not so much about what is regulated by law, but above all what is sensible and safe to do in a certain situation.

You can find more information about on the website of the CBR practical matters related to the theory exam. Of course we at Rijschool De Rijk are happy to help you with questions about theory lessons or the theory exam.

At Rijschool De Rijk in The Hague you can get the complete package. Follow a classroom or individual theory course with us. Contact us for information about the theory course or driving lessons in an automatic or manual car.

The test

An examiner from the CBR assesses how your driving skills are during the interim test. He takes a close look at everything that is also tested in a real exam, such as your control of the car, viewing behavior, driving at intersections and roundabouts and special operations. Self-reflection also part of the interim test. You fill in the Self-reflection form in advance that you will take with you to the test. The test takes as long as a real exam. For the car and car with trailer that is 55 minutes. Your instructor rides with you.

Advantages of the interim test

  • The interim test is very suitable for students who want to get used to the exam situation.
  • Nervousness is taken away from many students.
  • You can get tips from the examiner of the CBR.
  • You can earn exemption for your special actions for your "real" exam.

Advice

After the test, your instructor can print out an advice form for you. The examiner has issued advice for each component on the form. You can use this to see exactly which parts you still need to work on.

Make sure you have the advice form with you when you go to the exam. This is especially important if you have been granted an exemption for the special operations section. In addition, the advice form can be decisive in case of doubt about the exam result.

At Rijschool De Rijk you will be trained to be a confident road user. Contact us to schedule an intake lesson or for more information about our theory course and driving lessons in an automatic or manual car.

The driving test

The practical exam for the passenger car lasts 55 minutes. Fifteen minutes of this is available for an introduction and for an explanation of the results afterwards. You can ask your instructor to ride with you and be present at the final meeting. Then you learn all the more from the exam. Sometimes the driving instructor can't come along because, for example, an examiner in training gets priority.

Prior to

In the exam center you first meet the examiner. This explains how the exam goes.

After checking your proof of identity and your theory certificate, you hand over the closed self-reflection form. On that form you put your strong and less strong points in traffic before the exam. This form will be discussed with you after the exam results.

Then an eye test will follow in the parking lot, where you must be able to read the license plate of a stationary car at a distance of approximately 25 meter.

The examiner will then ask you for a number of preparations- and carry out checks on the exam car.

To laugh

Then the ride begins. Among other things, the examiner pays attention to your control of the car, viewing behavior, giving way and taking other road users into account. He assesses you on seven exam components, like it in- and add, the behavior at intersections and the special maneuvers.

In the renewed driving test you drive part of the exam – about ten to fifteen minutes – independently to a certain destination.

If you earned an exemption for the special maneuvers for this practical exam during the, then this part will be skipped. (The exemption always only applies to the next exam after your interim test).

Faults

During the exam you will have every opportunity to show what you can do. Completely flawless is not necessary, it's about the overall picture. It is important how you react to the other traffic and whether you are master of the situation. In short, the examiner checks whether you have enough at home to participate in traffic safely and independently.

Passed

Immediately afterwards, the examiner in the exam center will tell you the result.

If you passed, the examiner will discuss the self-reflection form with you and your Certificate of driving proficiency and the Certificate of suitability will be registered in the Central Driving License Register (CRB). The municipalities and the CBR can consult this register to determine whether you have passed the exam. The registration of the Certificate of Driving Proficiency is valid for three years, the registration of the Declaration of Suitability for one year.

failed

When you've failed, the examiner explains which components were insufficient. Your driving instructor can print out the results form with these points for you afterwards. It is wise to discuss these points with your instructor in connection with follow-up lessons.

The examiner will then discuss the Self-reflection form with you. When your answers on the self-reflection form differ from the examiner's findings, is it wise to discuss this with your instructor.
